Greece to Implement Nationwide Electronic Health Records Within a Year: Health Minister

Adonis Georgiadis

Adonis Georgiadis, the Minister of Health, spoke at the 2nd International Conference on Technology and Innovation of Southeast Europe, themed "The Future of Digital Health Today" held in Thessaloniki and co-organized by CISCO. He committed to delivering individual electronic health files within a year.

He emphasized the development of digital applications like expanded use of e-prescriptions, digital personal health files, and therapeutic protocols. He stated, "Almost all prescriptions go through the digital system. We must soon extend this system to all tourists, not just EU citizens, so everyone can use it and we can gain a complete picture of medicine use in Greece. Ideally, we can reach 100% digital prescriptions."

Georgiadis described the rapid development of digital tools in healthcare as "unthinkable" compared to his previous term as Minister. He noted, "The evolution of digital technology in Health in the past ten years is unimaginable. Today, Greece has perhaps the most sophisticated, or one of the most sophisticated, immaterial prescription systems in the entire European Union."

Finally, he highlighted a significant digital upgrade program for the entire health system funded through the Recovery Fund. He concluded,

"The crown jewel is definitely the electronic patient record. The project delivery schedule is until the summer of 2025. This means that in one year, every Greek citizen will have all of their medical history in their digital file. This will allow any doctor examining them, whether private or at a hospital, to have a complete picture of their health status."
