Ex-Cop Faces Retrial After Life Sentence Upheld

Korkoneas

Former police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas was re-arrested on Saturday and returned to prison. This follows the Supreme Court's decision to overturn an appeals court ruling that reduced his life sentence for killing a 15-year-old boy on duty.

The original life sentence was reinstated as the Supreme Court found no grounds for leniency due to a lack of prior criminal history. This marks the second time the high court has rejected a reduced sentence for Korkoneas.

The 2008 shooting of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old, sparked widespread riots across Greece. Korkoneas will now face a fourth trial, with the court re-evaluating whether any mitigating factors might apply to his case.
