Greece’s Council of State (CoS) reopened discussions on Monday regarding the contentious relocation of the Mount Parnitha casino to Maroussi, a northeastern suburb of Athens, following the hospitalisation of Council member Dimitris Vandoros due to a severe traffic accident.

Four injunctions are seeking to cancel a presidential decree (36/2023) that approves the urban redesign plan and land use in Dilaveri, Maroussi.

Municipalities, associations, and residents of Maroussi and nearby regions are opposing the decree, citing environmental concerns. Local agencies and residents gathered outside the CoS as the discussion resumed, presenting new environmental reports claiming the casino‘s relocation would excessively burden the area.

In a separate case, the CoS examined a presidential decree (June 7, 2022) that authorises a special urban plan for the fire-ravaged towns of Mati, Nea Makri, Rafina, and Marathonas, where 104 people died in July 2018. Ninety-three residents, along with a holiday-building cooperative and a landowners’ landscaping association, are protesting this plan.
