The Olympic torch's epic journey continues as it returns to metropolitan France after captivating audiences across five overseas territories during the Ocean Relay. This next stage shines a spotlight on the stunning landscapes and rich heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes department, culminating in an unprecedented detour through the heart of the Principality of Monaco.

The relay opens with a symbolic gesture as freediver Alice Modolo retrieves the torch from the depths of the Villefranche-sur-Mer harbour, the global capital of her sport. This Mediterranean town serves as the fitting backdrop to celebrate France's freediving prowess, exemplified by record-breaking athletes like Arnaud Jerald and Guillaume Nery.

From the sea, the torch embarks on a tour of the department's diverse treasures. It blazes past the citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer before paying homage to the UNESCO-recognized perfume know-how of Grasse and receiving a red-carpet welcome in the glamorous Cannes.

The torch then zips down the iconic La Croisette, drawing a star-studded ensemble of sporting legends, including Megan Rapinoe, Shaun White, and Mikaela Shiffrin.

The relay takes a regal turn as it enters the Principality of Monaco, celebrating the Olympic commitment of HSH Prince Albert II and HSH Princess Charlene. The torch then returns to the Alpes-Maritimes, visiting picturesque towns like Antibes Juan-les-Pins and Valdeblore–La Colmiane, before culminating in a grand celebration in Nice.

The day's 157 torchbearers represent a diverse array of talents, from elite champions like Alizé Cornet and Justine Tonso to inspiring everyday heroes. The relay also features a basketball team showcase, highlighting the sport's Olympic disciplines of 5x5 and 3x3.

As the torch departs for the neighbouring Vaucluse department, it leaves behind a trail of excitement and national pride, cementing the Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco as integral chapters in the Olympic torch's captivating saga.
