Tourist Deaths in Crete Highlight Drowning Dangers in Greece

A BBC investigation raises disturbing questions about the conduct of the Greek coastguard in the Aegean Sea. Anonymous witnesses allege mistreatment and even violence by the coastguard, potentially linked to the deaths of dozens of migrants in recent years. The Greek government denies the accusations, highlighting past rescue efforts. However, the BBC report's reliance on unidentified sources creates challenges in verifying the claims, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over the situation.

At least five people drowned across Greece on Saturday, with three separate tragedies unfolding in Crete. All three victims in Crete were tourists, highlighting the dangers posed by rough seas and unfamiliar swimming areas.

The first incident occurred in Hersonissos, where a 45-year-old Polish man ignored warnings about strong waves and entered the water. He was later found unconscious and pronounced dead at a local hospital. Local media also reported the drowning of a 90-year-old French man in a swimming pool within Hersonissos.

Western Crete witnessed the third drowning, where a 55-year-old Polish tourist lost his life after entering the turbulent waters off a Chania beach.

These incidents come amidst reports of drownings in other parts of Greece. An 87-year-old Greek man was pulled unconscious from the sea in Volos and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Similarly, an 86-year-old Greek citizen was found unresponsive in the water off Thesprotia and could not be revived by emergency services.

Authorities are urging caution, particularly for tourists unfamiliar with local conditions. Swimmers are advised to check weather forecasts and sea warnings before entering the water, avoid swimming alone, and stay close to shore if they are not strong swimmers.

Safety Tips

  • Always be aware of the weather conditions and sea warnings before swimming.
  • Never swim alone.
  • If you are not a strong swimmer, stay close to shore.
  • Be aware of rip currents.
  • If you see someone in trouble, call for help immediately.
