Sydney, Australia (GCT)– A Greek court has convicted a woman for launching a defamatory campaign against a prominent Greek Orthodox Archbishop based in Australia. Vasiliki Morali was sentenced to eleven months in prison, suspended for three years, for repeated online slander and insults targeting His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
The verdict, delivered by the Tripartite Misdemeanour Court of Kavala on June 18th, marks a significant victory for the Archbishop and sends a clear message that baseless attacks, even online, can have serious consequences.
The Holy Archdiocese of Australia expressed relief at the outcome, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and integrity. "We are unwavering in our commitment to address any allegations of abuse, illegality, or exploitation," a statement read, adding that Archbishop Makarios personally oversees all such matters.
Legal action was a last resort, according to the Archdiocese, after Ms. Morali repeatedly refused attempts to resolve the issue amicably.
While welcoming the verdict, the Archdiocese expressed hope that Ms. Morali would reflect on her actions. "We pray that [she] and her associates will choose a different path forward, one that will bring them peace," the statement concluded.
The Archdiocese extended gratitude to their legal team, particularly Athenian lawyer Stylianos Katselis, for securing a "just and transparent outcome."
