Undeterred, Aliki secretly auditioned for the National Theatre Drama School. She graduated in 1955, but her career had already begun with several theatrical performances, including a remarkable three-day turnaround to learn the lead role in “Romeo and Juliet.”
In 1962, Aliki formed her own theatre company and forged a prolific partnership with Filopimin Finos and his production company. Their collaborations produced numerous box-office hits, solidifying Aliki’s status as Greece’s first post-war superstar.

In September 1960, her great performance as Madalena won Aliki her first Award of Performance in Leading Part in the Movie Festival of Thessaloniki. The same movie represented Greece in the international festival of Cannes and received critical acclaim.
In 1965 Aliki married Dimitris Papamihail who was a fellow student in her Drama School, their marriage lasted 9 years, within which she gave birth to their son Yiannis.
Her movie career lasted till 1981, with the film Kataskopos Nelli and Aliki’s theatrical performances ended in 1996 with the play The Sound of Music, with Aliki playing the part of Maria.
Aliki Vougiouklaki, the beloved Greek actress and icon, passed away on July 23, 1996, just days after her 62nd birthday. Her untimely death, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, plunged Greece into mourning.
