On this historic day commemorating the 50th anniversary of Greece’s restoration of democracy after the junta and Constantine Karamanlis’s return, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou emphasized the significance during a reception at the Presidential Mansion’s gardens on Wednesday, as reported by ANA.

Greeks must take pride in their achievements, moving beyond the hardships of the post-World War II era to transform into “another Greece,” Sakellaropoulou remarked. She gave special recognition to resistance fighters who endured torture under the junta, such as Spyros Moustaklis, Alekos Panagoulis, and Sakis Karagiorgas. Additionally, she acknowledged the day’s observance of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and the ongoing occupation of Cyprus.

Reflecting on the achievements over the past 50 years, the Greek president highlighted that the day’s significance lies in ushering in “the smoothest and most progressive era of our modern history,” marking a political, social, and cultural triumph for Greeks. She noted that the cornerstone of this era has been the universal enjoyment of democracy, lifting restrictions and discrimination.
