Two of the four men accused of assaulting a 26-year-old French tourist in Rethymno, Crete, have been placed in pretrial detention after the charges were upgraded from a misdemeanour to a felony.

The assault, which occurred on Sunday, left the tourist with serious head and facial injuries.

The Rethymno Single-Member Misdemeanour Court made the decision to detain two of the suspects on Wednesday, while the remaining two were released but will still face trial in the Mixed Jury Court. The trial date will be determined by the Appeals Prosecutor of Crete.

The two released suspects claimed through their lawyer that they only intervened to prevent the incident. Video evidence presented by the defence allegedly shows the French tourist and his group were involved in the altercation, with one member reportedly holding a glass bottle.
