This morning in the suburb of Sepolia, two trains found themselves moving in opposite directions on a section of single-track line. The near head-on collision occurred after the Sepolia underpass works, on the side of the Agioi Anargyroi station. According to information cited by the local media the incident happened at 9:13 AM.
According to the same information, the error is attributed to a mistake by the traffic controller of the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) at the Acharnes Railway Center (SKA). The controller believed that train 1210, coming from Athens towards the Airport, had already passed through the single-track section and gave the green light for train 1307, coming from Kiato, to "proceed freely."
Both trains were full of passengers and found themselves moving in opposite directions, on a collision course at a speed of approximately 60 kilometers per hour. The collision was avoided by chance and thanks to the quick reflexes of the engineer of train 1210, who happened to overhear on the VHF radio the conversation of the station master at SKA and the instruction to the engineer of train 1307.
Regarding the distance at which the two trains stopped, some sources mention a distance of less than one kilometer, which means only a few seconds apart, while others report a distance of nearly three kilometers.
