The operation, conducted at slow speed for safety, is supported by the rescue tug “Panormitis,” equipped with fire-fighting and oil spill recovery capabilities, and is accompanied by three warships, including the frigate Psara, and a special armed team.
The primary objective of the rescue operation is to extinguish the fires on the tanker’s deck, ignited by explosives planted by Houthi armed groups.
The vessel has been burning for over four weeks since the attack. The 25-member crew, consisting of 23 Filipinos and two Russians, was safely evacuated by a French destroyer to Djibouti.
According to APE-MPA, the temperature on the tanker’s deck is currently reaching 400 degrees Celsius. The next steps involve using foam and water to extinguish the fires and sealing the holes created by the explosives. Additionally, an inert gas system will be employed in the fuel tanks to facilitate the safe transfer of oil to another vessel. Fuel company executives note that controlling fire involves managing the presence of oxygen, fuel, and temperature to prevent explosions and sustain the blaze.
