A British holidaymaker is fighting for his life after a severe accident near a popular beach in Zante, Greece. The man, believed to be in his 50s, was reported to have tripped and impaled himself on a metal fence on Monday night.
Emergency services responded quickly, with two fire engines arriving at the scene near a hotel in Agrilia, close to Laganas. Local reports indicate that an iron spike from the fence narrowly missed severing a carotid artery, which supplies blood to the brain. The man was taken to Zakynthos Hospital, where part of the fence remained lodged in his neck. He is currently intubated and reliant on a breathing machine.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The tourist has not yet been publicly identified.
This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns for visitors in the area. In July, a 23-year-old British man died after a fall while trying to climb off a hotel balcony. Earlier this year, another British tourist lost his life after falling from a fifth-floor hotel room in Turkey.
