Uber Reports Record Growth in Greece, Boosted by Tourism Surge

Uber recorded unprecedented growth in Greece during the summer of 2024, largely driven by a surge in tourism and an extended holiday season.

As foreign visitors poured into the country, demand for Uber’s ride-hailing services soared, starting in April and continuing through September, leading to widespread reports of taxi shortages. Uber attributed this to a lack of sufficient taxis to meet the peak demand, particularly in Greece's major cities.

In Athens, Uber saw a 47% increase in demand between July and September compared to the same period in 2023, with trips to and from Athens International Airport rising by 50% and rides to the port of Piraeus surging by 80%. Thessaloniki experienced an even larger jump, with a 76% rise in Uber trips during the same period, reflecting the growing use of the service across the country.

The strong demand in September, Uber noted, highlights Greece’s extended tourist season, with visitors staying later into the year. Americans and British travelers were the most frequent Uber users, followed by Australians, Canadians, and Brazilians.

Uber also expanded its Uber Boat service this summer, adding Paros to its list of popular destinations, which already includes Athens, Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini, and Corfu. The company emphasised that tourists continue to view Uber as a safe and reliable transportation option while navigating Greece's busy tourist regions.
