SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew received a warm welcome from the faithful during his visit to Pantanassa Monastery in Sydney on October 7, 2024. Nestled amidst a lush forest, the Monastery hosted the Patriarch for a day filled with prayer, blessings, and fellowship.

Upon arrival, the Patriarch was greeted by Abbot Archimandrite Eusebius, members of the Brotherhood, and Abbots and Abbesses from five Holy Monasteries within the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. The Greek Ambassador to Australia, Stavros Venizelos, and representatives from local associations, communities, and the Christian Youth Association were present.

"The Holy Archdiocese of Australia is blessed abundantly by God," stated Patriarch Bartholomew, "with five thriving Holy Monasteries, thanks to the dedication of monks and nuns and the paternal love of Archbishop Makarios." He lauded Pantanassa Monastery, founded in 1975 by Elder Stefanos, as a "shining example of such spirituality," flourishing in its beautiful setting.

During his address, Patriarch Bartholomew underscored the vital role of monasticism in the Orthodox Church and reflected on the life of dedication chosen by those on this sacred path.

A particularly touching moment unfolded as His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew exited the church among those watching the service on the screens outside the church. A young child stood expectantly among the parishioners, eagerly awaiting his blessing. As the Patriarch passed, he paused to bless the child, creating a moving and heartfelt scene.

The Synaxis welcomed Archbishop Makarios of Australia and esteemed members of the Patriarchal Synod, including Metropolitans Kyrillos of Imbros and Tenedos, Philotheos of Thessaloniki, Grand Protosyncellus Gregory, and Grand Ecclesiarch Aetios. Several Metropolitans and Bishops from across Australia were also present.

In his address, Archbishop Makarios expressed the local Church's immense pride in its monastic communities. He commended their "spiritual progress and prosperity," which he deemed "of primary importance," followed by numerical and material growth. Highlighting the centrality of divine love in a monk's life, he described it as "the quintessence of his life and the fulfilment of all needs and deprivations."

Responding to the Archbishop, Patriarch Bartholomew delineated the mission of Orthodox monasticism. He emphasized that "divine love should extend to both God and humanity, as the two cannot be separated." He further cautioned that while the Church might, at times, acknowledge other forms of monastic dedication beyond the Cenobitic tradition, "such practices are considered deviations from the true spirit of monasticism."

Praising their steadfastness and dedication, the Patriarch commended the monastic communities, stating that "monasticism in the Holy Archdiocese of Australia is thriving, deeply rooted in traditional ecclesiastical principles and flourishing under the enlightened leadership of the chosen Elders and the guidance of Archbishop Makarios."

In closing, the Ecumenical Patriarch offered words of encouragement and bestowed his "paternal and patriarchal wishes and blessings" upon all attendees. He prayed for "the grace and strength of our Lord in your monastic service." His heartfelt message resonated deeply, marking a moment of unity and spiritual inspiration for the monastic communities of the Archdiocese.

The visit concluded with a luncheon hosted by the Abbot and Brotherhood at a nearby Greek restaurant, a testament to the warmth and generosity of the Pantanassa community.
