The Panathinaikos footballer had filed a request for Greek citizenship for his one-year-old son on September 16.

Greek citizenship was given to the son of the deceased Panathinaikos footballer George Baldock.

On Tuesday, the Government Gazette granting Greek citizenship to Brody Baldock was published.

The footballer had filed a request to obtain Greek citizenship for his one-year-old son on September 16, just 25 days before his death.

The Official Gazette states:

"With the under data F.125119/2024/0009470/ 21-10-2024 decision of the Head of the Athens Citizenship Directorate, Ministry of the Interior, issued in accordance with par. 4 of article 26 of the Code of Hellenic of Citizenship (n. 3284/2004, A' 217), the request of the minor's father is accepted from 16-09-2024 with details: (surname) BALDOCK, (first name) BRODY, born in the UNITED KINGDOM on 09-10-2023, for the acquisition of Greek citizenship with the legal basis of acquisition, Article 2 of Law 3284/2004."

Baldock passed away at the age of just 31. An English-born Greek international, he was playing for Panathinaikos at the time following a long stint at Sheffield United where he made 219 appearances – including 83 in the Premier League.

The fullback, who won 12 caps for Greece, was found dead in the pool of his apartment in the south of Athens.

His fiancée had returned home to the UK with the couple’s young son to celebrate his first birthday. The defender was set to fly out the following day.

Baldock’s death was met with a huge outpouring of grief from Blades fans and the wider world of football.
