A new video related to the tragic Tempi train collision on February 28, 2023, has been handed over to the investigator assigned to uncover the causes of the disaster.
The footage, reportedly capturing the route of the freight train involved in the crash, has been sent to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Hellenic Police in Athens for authenticity verification.
This new evidence surfaces 19 months after the deadly railway accident, which claimed 57 lives. Despite efforts to accelerate the investigation, the case file remains open and has not yet been referred to court.
According to reports from Eleftheria, investigators have recently focused on an area near Katerini, searching for additional visual evidence from a third camera, alongside the material already included in the case file. If the video is proven authentic, it may disprove rumours that the freight train was carrying illicit cargo, reinforcing findings that the train only held the officially recorded goods.
In addition to the video, delays persist in the release of a report from the National Technical University (NTU) on the causes of the explosion that followed the train collision. Early claims suggested the explosion was caused by silicone oil from power transformers, but members of an independent family committee have contested this, prompting further investigation into the possibility of unregistered flammable materials on board.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings continue, with several individuals, including the Secretary General for Civil Protection, offering apologies or facing new deadlines to respond to charges related to the disaster. Investigators are still exploring all possible factors surrounding the explosion, which may further delay the resolution of the case.
