Angelina Jolie Channels Opera Icon Maria Callas in New Biopic 'Maria' See Trailer

Biopic to Premiere in Select Theaters November 27, Streaming on Netflix December 11

Los Angeles, CA — Angelina Jolie is set to portray the legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the upcoming biopic "Maria," directed by Pablo Larraín. A new trailer was released by Netflix on Thursday, October 24, showcasing Jolie's remarkable transformation into Callas.

Known for her powerful performances, the 49-year-old Oscar-winning actress takes on the role of the revered American-Greek soprano in Larraín's latest venture, following his acclaimed depictions of Jacqueline Kennedy in "Jackie" and Princess Diana in "Spencer."

The film delves into the final chapter of Callas's life, as she retreats to Paris to reflect on her glamorous yet tumultuous career. Callas, renowned for her exceptional vocal range that spanned three octaves, rose to international fame before her untimely death from a heart attack in 1977 at the age of 53.

Jolie unveiled her initial apprehensions about the demanding role during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival. The film had its world premiere at the event in August.

"I felt incredibly nervous and underwent nearly seven months of vocal training," Jolie admitted. "My first singing attempt was nerve-wracking, but my sons were there to provide support."

The actress also highlighted Larraín's supportive approach, which included gradually building her confidence. "He started me in small settings and eventually at La Scala, encouraging my growth," she explained.

Alongside Jolie, the film features Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino. The script, crafted by Steven Knight of "Peaky Blinders" fame, was completed prior to the Hollywood WGA strike in 2023, allowing production to proceed swiftly post-strike.
