Turkey Criticizes EU’s Maritime Maps, Claims Violation of Sovereign Rights

Greek EEZ

On Saturday, Turkey criticized the European Union for its maritime spatial planning maps of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, which depict Greece’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extending 200 nautical miles beyond its territorial waters

Greece has not officially declared an EEZ in the Aegean due to ongoing disputes with Turkey regarding its boundaries.

“The EU has no authority to comment on maritime disputes between sovereign states. Its involvement in these matters complicates efforts to resolve such disputes,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated, declaring the map “null and void” and without legal standing.

“We will not permit violations of Türkiye’s rights through this planning,” the ministry added, asserting that the EU’s unilateral actions “undermine the search for a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the interconnected issues in the Aegean.”
