Heraklion native, Idomeneas Avramakis, once again captivated spectators and fellow runners at the Athens Authentic Marathon. The 73-year-old retired regional employee, known for his distinctive ancient Athenian hoplite attire, completed the challenging 42-kilometer race in 8 hours and 47 minutes. This year marked his 18th running the marathon in this historic costume, echoing the legendary run of Pheidippides.
Avramakis, speaking to the newspaper Patrida, emphasized that participation, not speed, is his primary motivation. He sees the marathon as a testament to human willpower and resilience, a philosophy he embodies through his own life challenges. Just 30 months ago, he suffered a serious car accident requiring a metal rod to be inserted in his leg. Undeterred, he trained and ran this year's marathon with the rod still in place, proving that determination can overcome physical limitations.
This isn't the first time Avramakis has faced adversity. Eighteen years ago, a severe health crisis landed him in intensive care for a month. This transformative experience shifted his perspective and led him to adopt barefoot running. He embraces the elements, finding a sense of freedom running in even the most extreme weather.
Avramakis's passion for running extends beyond Greece. He has participated in international marathons, including one in China, where his unique style and spirit left a lasting impression. Those who know him admire his persistence, courage, and boundless energy. At 73, he remains a beloved figure, always ready with a smile and willing to connect with others. Idomeneas Avramakis is a living example that limits are meant to be broken.
