A 31-year-old Greek man with Ukrainian descent has been found guilty of espionage after being caught photographing Thessaloniki’s ‘Makedonia‘ International Airport.
The verdict was delivered by a Thessaloniki court for offenders on Friday, following the incident on December 23, where the man was observed taking pictures of airport facilities.
Despite clear signage prohibiting photography in certain areas of the airport, the man proceeded to take photographs, leading to his arrest by local police. He was subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison for espionage, though the sentence was converted into a daily fine of 10 euros, amounting to 5,400 euros in total.
In addition to the daily fine, he was handed a separate 1,000-euro penalty. The court, however, acquitted him of the charge of entering a forbidden zone.
The case has raised concerns over airport security and the potential implications of unauthorised photography at sensitive locations.
