The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Mohammad Iqbal, the prime suspect behind the deadly 2023 boat tragedy off Greece that killed hundreds. Iqbal was apprehended at Lahore airport.
The June 2023 disaster involved an overcrowded boat carrying hundreds of migrants, including 262 Pakistanis, which sank near Pylos.
Iqbal, a resident of Libya since 2013, ran a human trafficking network, illegally sending Pakistanis to Europe via boats.
The FIA traced illegal transactions worth Rs80 million ($287,356) from his bank account. Iqbal is facing multiple charges, and FIA’s crackdown on human trafficking continues.
The boat had a capacity of 400 people but carried up to 750 illegal immigrants.
