In a recent visit to Islamabad, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was warmly received by Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in an official ceremony on February 13, 2025.
During a joint press conference, Prime Minister Sharif expressed Pakistan’s unwavering support for Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, emphasizing that Pakistan stands firmly by Turkey on the Cyprus issue.
Sharif praised Erdogan as a significant leader within the Islamic world, highlighting his advocacy for the rights of peoples, including those in Gaza, Palestine, and Kashmir. Sharif noted that Erdogan’s voice resonates not only within the Islamic community but globally, acknowledging his contributions to Turkey’s transformation.
The Pakistani prime minister also recognized Turkey’s consistent support for the Jammu and Kashmir cause, promising reciprocal unwavering support to Ankara. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistan in combating terrorism and appreciated Turkey’s solidarity in times of loss. Sharif called on neighboring Afghanistan to contribute positively to the fight against terrorism rather than exacerbate it.
Expressing gratitude for Erdogan’s visit—the first in five years—Sharif extended a warm welcome to both the Turkish president and his delegation, underscoring the enduring friendship between the two nations.
As of now, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is recognized only by Turkey. The TRNC declared independence in 1983, but it has not been widely recognized by the international community. The United Nations and the European Union consider Northern Cyprus to be part of the Republic of Cyprus. Numerous diplomatic efforts have been made over the years to resolve the situation and reunify the island, but a comprehensive settlement has yet to be reached. There are ongoing international discussions and calls for the removal of the Turkish army from Cyprus as part of efforts to advance negotiations for a peaceful resolution.
