On Sunday, February 16, 2025, Fiona Douskou, the Liberal Party candidate for the federal seat of Barton, officially launched her campaign at a vibrant fundraising event held at Manjits Wharf in Sydney, Australia. With over 100 VIP guests in attendance, including prominent Liberal figures like former U.S. Ambassador Arthur Sinodinos and Senator David Sharma, the event highlighted Douskou’s growing momentum as a formidable contender in the upcoming federal election, expected by mid-2025. As a Greek-Australian cybersecurity expert, technology entrepreneur, and Bayside Council Councillor, Douskou is positioning herself as a fresh, community-focused voice with a strong chance of flipping Barton from Labor’s grasp.

The atmosphere at Manjits Wharf was electric, with attendees including Mark Coure MP (Member for Oatley), Deputy Mayor of George’s River Council Nancy Liu, and councilors from various local government areas. The turnout signaled strong party and community support for Douskou, who delivered a compelling address highlighting her deep ties to Barton and her vision for its future. Drawing on her upbringing as the daughter of Greek migrants, she spoke passionately about the values of hard work, community, and aspiration instilled in her by her parents—values she now brings to her candidacy.

“Barton deserves a representative who understands its heartbeat,” Douskou told the crowd. “I’ve spent over a decade working with the Liberal Party on the issues that matter most to our community—supporting small businesses, strengthening local economies, and ensuring our voices are heard in Canberra.” Her speech also outlined the Liberal Party’s plan to “get Australia back on track” following what she described as a lackluster Labor term. She pointed to the party’s policy document, The Priorities of a Dutton Coalition Government, which addresses critical issues such as the cost of living, energy policy, and community safety.

A Q&A session with Sinodinos and Sharma followed, addressing urgent national issues such as the cost-of-living crisis, Australia’s energy challenges, and the concerning rise in antisemitic violence. The Liberal leaders emphasized practical solutions, strengthening Douskou’s campaign as one rooted in effective, results-oriented governance—a message likely to resonate with Barton’s voters.

A Candidate with Roots and Reach

Fiona Douskou’s story exemplifies resilience and ambition. Born into a Greek migrant family in Newtown, Sydney, she grew up surrounded by small businesses, as her parents and grandparents ran local enterprises. This background inspired her to establish her children’s entertainment business after high school, a venture that sharpened her entrepreneurial skills. Today, as a cybersecurity specialist with credentials from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, she merges professional expertise with a personal commitment to community service.

Her political journey has seen her contest the 2023 NSW State Election as the Liberal candidate for Newtown. There, she campaigned to ease household pressures, improve public transport, and champion small businesses—“the lifeblood of our community,” as she describes them. Although she didn’t unseat the Greens’ Jenny Leong, her spirited run showcased her tenacity and ability to connect with voters, qualities that are now fueling her federal bid.

In Barton, a marginal seat in Sydney’s southern suburbs currently held by retiring Labor MP Linda Burney, Douskou has a genuine opportunity. Political analysts view the electorate as winnable for the Liberals, particularly with Burney’s exit creating an open contest. Douskou’s local credentials—a Bayside Councillor—and endorsements from prominent figures like Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who praised her engagement with business owners in December 2024, enhance her prospects. Her focus on economic strength, job creation, and community infrastructure aligns with the Liberal Party’s strategy to reclaim Sydney seats, making her a candidate to watch.

Community Champion with a Diverse Portfolio

Beyond politics, Douskou’s community involvement distinguishes her. As a NSW Cybersecurity Ambassador and youth mentor, she is shaping the next generation of tech leaders. Her roles with the Australian Women in Security Network and as Culture Chair of a Diversity and Inclusion Team highlight her advocacy for women, LGBTQI+, and Indigenous Australians. A former president of the Rotary Club and a volunteer with the Greek Orthodox Parish, she has led fundraisers for causes such as the Bayside Women’s Shelter, earning her a reputation as a hands-on leader.

Her Greek heritage remains a cornerstone of her identity. In 2023, she met with Archbishop Makarios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia to discuss issues facing the Greek diaspora, further cementing her cultural ties. “I’m tenacious and personable,” Douskou says, “and I believe in collaboration to build stronger communities.”

A Winnable Seat and a Bright Future

As of February 22, 2025, Douskou’s campaign is gaining traction. With Labor’s hold on Barton weakening and the Liberals rallying behind her, she is well-positioned to make history as the electorate’s next federal MP. Her blend of business acumen, technological expertise, and grassroots advocacy presents a compelling package for voters seeking change. If her launch event is any indication, Fiona Douskou has the momentum, the message, and the support to turn Barton blue—a prospect that could reshape Sydney’s political landscape.
