Turkey believed that its fraternal relationship with Kazakhstan, within the Turkic States Organization, was unwavering. However, Astana’s decision to open an embassy in Nicosia struck like a lightning bolt in Ankara. Turkish newspapers describe it as a “great shame” and “betrayal,” while the shock intensifies with the official statements from Kazakhstan.

According to Turkish journalist Şefa Karahasan, the new Kazakh ambassador, Nikolai Zhumakanov, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and clearly stated his country’s position.

“Kazakhstan firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus within its internationally recognized borders,” he stated, implying, as Turkish reports suggest, that there is “occupation” in Cyprus.

The Importance of Cyprus for Kazakhstan

Zhumakanov emphasized that Cyprus is a crucial partner for his country, stating that he views Cyprus as a bridge to the EU.

“Kazakhstan places great importance on cooperation with Cyprus and considers your country a significant partner in the European Union and the broader Mediterranean region.”

Ignoring Ankara – Kazakhstan and the TRNC

The “slap” from Astana is not limited to the embassy opening. As early as 2023, Kazakhstan had sent clear messages when it did not invite the “TRNC” to the Summit of the Turkic States Organization, despite the observer-member status held by the Turkish Cypriot administration.

Turkish Anger and FETO Theories

The Turkish newspaper Yeni Akit comments that Kazakhstan humiliated Turkey with this move, while pro-government media revive the narrative about the origins of the FETO organization in Kazakhstan.

The Turkish side reminds that FETO has been active in Kazakhstan since 1993, claiming that the Suleyman Demirel University and other educational institutions remain under its influence.

Ankara – Astana: A Challenged Relationship

Turkey’s reaction is strong, but it remains to be seen if there will be practical consequences for bilateral relations. By pursuing a balance between East and West, Kazakhstan appears to have chosen a more independent path, even if it displeases Ankara.

Outrage Over Egypt Too

Today has been particularly difficult for Ankara, which has also criticized Egypt’s approach towards Nicosia.

Another point that incited Turkey’s anger was the awarding of the former Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry with the Makarios III Medal by the Republic of Cyprus. The Turkish media commented that “Cairo openly disregards the existence of the TRNC and the rights of Turkish Cypriots.”

Turkey Warns of Response

Turkey warns that it will not tolerate any attempts to marginalize it from developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue. According to Turkish diplomatic sources in the media, Ankara will continue to defend the rights of both Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and will not recognize any agreement or policy that deviates from its established positions.
