For the first time, Greek schools will celebrate EOKA Day on April 1, honoring the 1955-1959 Cypriot uprising against British colonial rule and the push for unification with Greece.
This follows a decision by Greek Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki.
Greek Education Minister Athena Michaelidou announced that a circular formalizing the celebration will be issued by the ministry on Monday. Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting that day, Michaelidou noted, “This was a priority we set from the start of our administration. We are deeply satisfied and moved by this decision.” She added that educational materials have been prepared and will be distributed to schools in Greece.
President Nikos Christodoulides, speaking at an event on Sunday, praised the Greek government’s move, stating, “This was something we pursued from day one of our government.” He also commended Michaelidou for her efforts in securing this outcome.
The decision has received widespread support, including from House President and Disy leader Annita Demetriou, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Disy MEP Michalis Hadjipantela, and Diko.
