Athens, Greece – Monday, April 21, 2025
Greece’s tourism industry is gearing up for a vibrant summer 2025, with international air travel to the country set to rise significantly. According to INSETE’s Air Data Tracker, 28.2 million international air seats are scheduled for Greece this summer, a 4.6% increase from 2024, signaling robust global demand for Greek destinations.
UK and Germany Lead the Charge
The United Kingdom remains Greece’s top tourism market, with 5.6 million seats booked, up 2.2% from last year, accounting for 20% of total air traffic. Germany follows with 4.7 million seats, a 2.5% rise, representing 17% of arrivals. These two nations continue to drive Greece’s tourism success.
Italy’s Consistent Appeal
Italy secures third place with 2.5 million seats, reflecting a 3.9% year-on-year increase, highlighting Greece’s enduring popularity among Italian travellers.
U.S. and Israel Show Remarkable Growth
The United States is emerging as a key market, with 727,000 seats booked, an 18.6% jump from 2024, defying concerns about inflation impacting travel. Even more striking is Israel’s 52.1% surge, with over 1.3 million seats, establishing it as a significant new contributor to Greek tourism.
Emerging Markets Gain Traction
Greece is also attracting travellers from less traditional markets, with notable increases in air seats:
- Saudi Arabia: +45% (84,000 seats)
- Albania: +56% (156,000 seats)
- Armenia: +68.5% (75,000 seats)
- Georgia: +113% (126,000 seats)
This diversification reflects Greece’s growing appeal in Southeast Europe and the Middle East.
Challenges in Some European Markets
Despite the overall growth, a few European markets show declines:
- France: -2.6% (1.7 million seats)
- Poland: -6.7% (682,000 seats)
- Denmark: -7.3% (298,000 seats)
These dips underscore the need for targeted strategies to maintain Greece’s competitiveness.
Economic and Industry Impact
The rise in air seats signals a strong recovery for global tourism, boosting Greece’s economy through increased bookings, airline revenue, and local business growth. The influx of diverse travellers, particularly from the U.S., Israel, and emerging markets, offers opportunities to tailor services to new demographics, enhancing Greece’s global tourism standing.
As Greece prepares for summer 2025, its ability to attract both traditional and new markets highlights its resilience and allure. The tourism sector is set to thrive, fostering economic growth and reinforcing Greece’s position as a premier travel destination.
