Sydney, Australia – April 29, 2025 – In a momentous event that left a lasting impression, the Greek Presidential Guard, the renowned Evzones, visited St Spyridon Greek Orthodox College in Kingsford, Sydney, Australia. The delegation, which traveled to Australia for ANZAC Day commemorations, was greeted with overwhelming enthusiasm by 800 students, faculty, and parishioners during a special Doxology service marking the start of the school’s second term.

The Hellenic Club Sydney, in collaboration with The Joint Committee for the Commemoration of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign, and with the support of the NSW Government, hosted the Evzones coming to Sydney in 2025. This visit commemorates almost 125 years of Australians and Hellenes standing together to defend shared ideals and homelands. Additionally, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, making this visit a cornerstone of the Australian Hellenic community’s tributes to those who sacrificed so much for our present and future.
A Warm Welcome from the College and Parish
The Evzones, accompanied by their commanding officers, were received with deep reverence by the school community. Parish Priest Father Steven Scoutas extended a heartfelt welcome and thanked the President of the Hellenic Republic for permitting the delegation’s visit.
“This is a rare and extraordinary honor for our school,” said Father Scoutas. “The Evzones are not just soldiers—they are living symbols of Greece’s history, discipline, and excellence.”
Head of College, Mrs. Amelia Katsogiannis, echoed these sentiments, drawing parallels between the Evzones’ motto, “ΑΙΕΝ ΑΡΙΣΤΕΥΕΙΝ” (Forever Excelling), and the school’s own values. “Their dedication and precision inspire our students to strive for greatness in all aspects of life,” she remarked.

A Moving Address by the Evzones Commander
Commander Michael Tzinieris, visibly moved by the warm reception, addressed the students with pride. “Standing before you today, we see the future of the Hellenic spirit in Australia,” he said. “Your enthusiasm reminds us why we serve with honor.”
Accompanying officer Lieutenant Ioannis Kontogiannis took the opportunity to explain the significance of the Evzones’ iconic uniform—a symbol of Greece’s rich military heritage. The students listened intently as they learned about the fustanella (pleated kilt), the tsarouchi (traditional shoes), and the rigorous training required to join the elite unit.

An Unforgettable Experience for Students
Following the Doxology, the Evzones toured the college, interacting with younger students awestruck by their presence. Many children eagerly asked questions about their duties, while others marveled at their immaculate posture and discipline.
“It was amazing to see them up close,” said one Year 5 student. “I want to be as disciplined and strong as they are!”
The visit concluded with light refreshments, allowing students and staff to engage further with the delegation. The event celebrated Greek heritage and reinforced the strong cultural ties between Greece and Australia.

A Shared Legacy of Excellence
The Evzones’ visit was more than just a ceremonial occasion—it was a powerful reminder of the values shared between the Greek Presidential Guard and St. Spyridon College. Both institutions uphold the ideals of discipline, honor, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
As the delegation departed, the school community was left with a profound sense of pride and inspiration. For the students of St Spyridon, the day will be remembered as a historic milestone that deepened their connection to Hellenic tradition and motivated them to embody the spirit of “Forever Excelling.”
