Greek Airline Halts Tel Aviv Flights Amid Israel-Houthi Tensions

Aegean Airlines saw 65% drop in passengers in 2020

Greek carrier Aegean Airlines canceled its Tel Aviv flights on Monday due to escalating regional tensions stemming from Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza. According to Israeli Channel 12, Aegean extended the suspension by an additional day, with flights initially set to resume on May 19.

Israel Hayom reported that the Lufthansa Group—encompassing Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings—has prolonged its suspension of flights to and from Israel until May 25. Similarly, Transavia, AirBaltic, and Air France have canceled their Israel services until May 20.

British Airways has suspended its Tel Aviv routes through June 14, while Air Canada extended its flight cancellations until September 8, per the same source.

The cancellations follow intensified clashes between Israel and Yemen’s Houthi group. Since November 2023, the Houthis have attacked commercial vessels in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where Israel’s offensive has killed over 53,300 people.
