Ange Postecoglou, speaking at the press conference ahead of the Europa League final, addressed the possibility of coming to Greece.
Ange Postecoglou is making history in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, becoming the first Greek-Australian coach to lead a team in a European final.
The Tottenham manager, during the pre-final press conference, was asked by a Greek journalist about this milestone and expressed immense pride in his Greek heritage. He also revealed that he is considering retiring as a coach in Greece, putting an end to rumours linking him with the AEK bench.
Postecoglou on His Greek Roots
Here’s what he said: “I’m very proud. I was born in Greece, and I’m very proud to be Greek. My father made sure I knew my roots and what it means to be Greek, something I carry with me throughout my life. I grew up in Australia, on the other side of the world, where football, unfortunately, wasn’t a prominent sport. But my father brought his love for football from Greece to Australia.
He worked very hard, as I’ve said many times. My parents left their homeland, and everything they knew, for their children, for me. I hold that in my heart. They’re not with me today, but they’re always with me. I feel very strong. I love being Greek, I love that I was born in Greece, and I think that’s where I’ll retire one day. I also love that I grew up in Australia, even if football wasn’t a big sport there.
Growing up in Australia, you develop an approach to sports where you tackle everything, no matter how big or small. I’m proud of both my roots. (in Greek: Thank you for the question, and I’m very proud to be Greek).”
