In a significant move to address problem gambling, Greece’s Gaming Supervision and Control Committee (EEEP) has joined forces with the Health Quality Assurance Organization (OHQA) through a newly signed Memorandum of Cooperation. The partnership aims to strengthen prevention, treatment, and support for gambling addiction through scientifically backed interventions.
The collaboration comes amid growing concerns over the social and economic consequences of gambling addiction. Under the agreement, the EEEP and OHQA will work together to promote responsible gaming, ensure timely interventions, and provide support for affected individuals and their families.
EEEP President Dimitris Ntzanatos emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating: “We are delighted that through this coordination, we can leverage expertise and minimize bureaucratic hurdles to deliver effective solutions to a problem with significant societal impacts.”
The OHQA will oversee the implementation of the memorandum over the next three years, with a joint coordination committee monitoring progress. OHQA CEO Christos Nestoras highlighted the initiative’s focus on evidence-based policies, saying: “Our goal is to establish a modern, functional framework rooted in scientific research, respect for citizens, and practical support for those in need.”
The memorandum follows the EEEP’s recent announcement of plans to establish a Gambling Observatory, which will utilize Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence to assess risks and support research. The observatory will also inform the public and institutions about emerging gambling-related threats.
An EEEP spokesperson described the initiative as “a pioneering approach at an international level,” emphasizing its commitment to transparency, independence, and scientific rigor.
