Greek Volcanologist Makes History with Prestigious Fisher Medal Award

In a landmark achievement for Greek science, Professor Paraskevi (Evi) Nomikou has been awarded the esteemed Fisher Medal by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI)—becoming the first Greek volcanologist ever to receive this honour.

The quadrennial award, named after renowned American volcanologist Richard Fisher, recognizes Nomikou’s groundbreaking research in: Submarine volcano morphology and Marine volcanic processes.

A professor of geological oceanography at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Nomikou has led over 80 oceanographic expeditions, with a focus on underwater volcanoes such as Santorini’s Kolumbo—one of the Mediterranean’s most active volcanic centres.

The Santorini-born scientist made history by establishing SANTORY, Greece’s first submarine volcano observatory. Her work has been instrumental in monitoring seismic activity, providing critical data during recent volcanic unrest in the Aegean.

The medal will be officially presented on July 2 in Geneva during the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly, where Nomikou’s research will be celebrated among the world’s leading volcanologists.
