Tottenham Players Threaten Revolt After Ange Postecoglou’s Sacking

Tottenham Hotspur players are reportedly furious and considering a revolt following the abrupt dismissal of Australian manager Ange Postecoglou, just 16 days after he ended the club’s 17-year trophy drought with a thrilling Europa League victory over Manchester United in Bilbao.

Despite delivering on his promise to win silverware in his second season, Postecoglou’s two-year tenure at the Premier League club has come to an end. The UK Telegraph reports that his exit has sparked significant unrest, with “a number of players” angered by the decision and some even contemplating leaving the club. Sources claim the next manager will face a “huge task” to mend the fractured dressing room.

“They’re absolutely livid about how this went down,” a source told the Telegraph. “The new manager is walking into a tough spot.”

A dismal Premier League campaign, where Tottenham finished 17th after losing 22 of 38 matches, put Postecoglou under intense scrutiny. A wave of injuries and his unwavering commitment to an attacking style of play, despite criticism, led to mounting pressure. Ultimately, chairman Daniel Levy decided to part ways with the 59-year-old, with British media breaking the news of his sacking around 4 PM London time on Friday, confirmed by the club an hour later.

In a classy statement, Postecoglou reflected positively on his time at Spurs:
“Looking back, my overriding feeling is pride. Leading this historic club and bringing back its glory is something I’ll carry forever. That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work and belief in a dream many thought impossible. We’ve laid foundations for future success, and I have immense faith in this squad’s potential.”

The Tottenham board acknowledged Postecoglou’s impact, crediting him with reviving the club’s traditional attacking identity and etching “a new chapter in our history” with the European triumph. “Ange is only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legends Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw,” the statement read.

However, the board cited a need to “compete on multiple fronts” and admitted that injuries and a focus on the European campaign contributed to the Premier League struggles. “This was a tough decision, not taken lightly, but we believe it’s the right one to maximize our chances of success moving forward,” they added.

The sacking marks the end of a rollercoaster period for Tottenham, with Postecoglou’s exit leaving a divided squad and an uncertain future for the club.
