Tottenham Hotspur has announced the shock dismissal of manager Ange Postecoglou, just weeks after the Australian guided the club to their first major trophy in 17 years with a Europa League victory over Manchester United (1-0).
The decision, confirmed by the club on Friday (6/6), comes exactly two years after Postecoglou’s appointment. Despite the historic European success, Spurs’ dismal Premier League form—finishing 17th last season—proved decisive in the board’s verdict.
In a statement, Tottenham acknowledged the "magical moments" under Postecoglou but stressed that "emotional factors cannot dictate such a critical decision." The club pointed to a concerning league record of just 78 points from their last 66 matches, culminating in their worst-ever Premier League finish. Injuries to key players, including Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and James Maddison, further compounded their struggles.
Postecoglou’s first season had offered promise, with a fifth-place finish (66 points) securing Europa League qualification. Many believed this year’s continental triumph would buy him time, especially after he quipped to fans during the trophy parade: "In the best TV shows, Season 3 is always better than Season 2."
However, chairman Daniel Levy described the sacking as "one of the most difficult decisions we’ve had to make," while praising Postecoglou for laying "a fantastic foundation" with a young squad.
Bookmakers have already installed Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Fulham’s Marco Silva as early favorites to replace him. The move has divided fans, with some calling it premature given Postecoglou’s cup success, while others backed the board’s ruthless pursuit of league consistency.
