In a landmark moment for India-Cyprus relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian honor of Cyprus, during a ceremonial event at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Monday.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides presented the prestigious decoration in recognition of Modi’s global statesmanship and the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Expressing gratitude, Prime Minister Modi said the honor was not merely personal but symbolic of the aspirations and resilience of over 1.4 billion Indians. “This recognition is not just for me; it is a tribute to the 140 crore Indians. It acknowledges their strength and aspirations,” Modi remarked during the bilateral engagement.
Taking to social media platform X, Modi wrote, “Humbled to receive the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’ of Cyprus. I dedicate it to the friendship between our nations.”
He emphasized that the award reflected India’s inclusive values and global vision, referencing the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family. “This honor reflects the cultural harmony of our nation,” he noted, adding that it stood as a testament to peace, sovereignty, and mutual respect.

The visit holds special significance as it marks the first-ever trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus, highlighting the countries’ intent to boost diplomatic and economic ties.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi was received with full state honors at the Presidential Palace. His bilateral meeting with President Christodoulides included extensive discussions on expanding cooperation in trade, technology, security, and investment.
Both leaders expressed commitment to elevating the partnership to new heights, describing the talks as constructive and forward-looking.
Modi also paid homage to Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus and a national figure of immense historical significance, by laying a floral wreath at his memorial.

India and Cyprus have shared a robust relationship since the formal establishment of diplomatic ties in 1962. Over the decades, Cyprus has stood by India on pivotal global issues, including support for New Delhi’s stance on Kashmir at the United Nations.
A warm reception from the local Indian diaspora also marked the visit of the Indian Prime Minister. Though relatively small, the community plays a vital role in Cypriot society, particularly in the fields of education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
Monday’s honor marks the 23rd time Prime Minister Modi has received a national decoration from a foreign nation—an acknowledgment of his growing stature on the international stage and his role in promoting regional peace, inclusive development, and spiritual diplomacy.
As both nations look to deepen their strategic partnership, the visit signals a renewed commitment to cooperation in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
