President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a phone call on Monday with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to discuss escalating regional tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, as well as broader issues affecting the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa.
According to a statement by Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, both leaders emphasised the urgent need to de-escalate the Iran-Israel confrontation, warning that continued military action risks plunging the region into further instability. They agreed that a negotiated political solution remains the only viable path forward, rejecting any military resolution to the crisis.
The leaders also voiced concern over the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, stressing that the current conflict must not divert international attention from the ongoing suffering. They called for an immediate end to the violence and urged greater efforts to ease restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza to relieve the civilian population.
Beyond the current conflicts, El-Sisi and Mitsotakis discussed a range of pressing regional matters, including the demarcation of maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean, illegal migration flows from Africa to Greece, and the political stalemate in Libya. They reaffirmed their shared position on the urgent need to form a unified Libyan government tasked with organizing simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. Both leaders expressed support for ongoing efforts by the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State to adopt a workable and inclusive political roadmap.
In addition to addressing regional security, the two leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening Egyptian-Greek bilateral relations. They explored opportunities for deeper cooperation, particularly in economic development and energy, building on recent momentum between the two countries.
President El-Sisi also took the opportunity to reaffirm Egypt’s dedication to safeguarding religious heritage sites, specifically Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai. He emphasised the site’s historical and spiritual significance and underscored that Egypt would not interfere in its affairs. The President pointed to a recent Egyptian court ruling as a clear demonstration of this commitment and called for a correction of misleading reports circulating in parts of Europe.
