Cyprus took swift action to support the victims of a devastating suicide bombing at Mar Elias Church in Damascus, which occurred just three days earlier on June 22. The Cypriot Council of Ministers approved an emergency grant of €50,000 to aid the affected families, channeling the funds through the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch. This financial support targets urgent needs, including medical care for the injured, psychological assistance, and repairs to the church property damaged in the blast.

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos personally called Patriarch John X (Yazigi) to express Cyprus’s solidarity and unwavering support for Syria’s Christian communities. He condemned the terrorist attack in the strongest terms and urged Syrian authorities to investigate thoroughly and protect the country’s Christian population. Kombos also raised the issue at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on June 23, emphasizing the urgent need to support vulnerable Christian groups across the region. Cyprus’ swift response underscores its commitment to humanitarian aid and religious freedom in the face of tragedy.
