European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen faces a no-confidence vote in the European Parliament this Thursday, following a debate scheduled for Monday in Strasbourg, according to Politico.
The motion, spearheaded by Romanian right-wing MEP Gheorghe Piperea, was triggered by controversy over undisclosed 2021 text messages between Von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla regarding Europe’s COVID-19 vaccine procurement. Piperea secured sufficient signatures last week to initiate the vote.
Symbolic Move Amid Rising Tensions
This is the first no-confidence challenge against a Commission president in over a decade. While the motion is unlikely to pass, as most political groups are expected to oppose it, it reflects growing frustration with Von der Leyen in Brussels due to recent controversies and decisions.
A successful motion would force the resignation of the entire Commission. However, some members of Von der Leyen’s European People’s Party and the European Conservatives and Reformists Party, initially supportive, have withdrawn their backing following internal pressure.
