Greek Government Vows to Address ATM Withdrawal Fees

Euronet ATM

The Greek government announced on Friday that it will pursue legislative measures if reports of new withdrawal fees at ATMs previously operated by Piraeus Bank, now managed by Cashflex, are verified.

“No loopholes for withdrawal charges will be tolerated, even at a fraction of ATMs,” government sources told local media, emphasizing that “if two-tiered fees are confirmed, the government will act.”

The issue stems from customer complaints about fees of up to €2.10 for cash withdrawals at ATMs they once used for free. Approximately 850 ATMs, sold by Piraeus Bank to Cashflex (in which the bank holds a 20% stake), are affected. These machines are located in high-traffic areas like metro stations, hospitals, supermarkets, and airports.

The fees have drawn sharp criticism in parliament. PASOK MPs Pavlos Geroulanos and Milena Apostolaki accused the government of enabling banks to skirt fee regulations. SYRIZA spokesperson Kostas Zachariadis labeled the situation “a major scam,” noting that citizens are being charged even for basic services like balance inquiries.
