Greek Government Moves to Legally Recognize St. Catherine’s Monastery of Sinai in Greece

Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced a new bill from the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports to establish the legal personality of St. Catherine’s Monastery of Sinai in Greece.

The legislation addresses a longstanding issue, granting clear legal status to the historic monastery for the first time in 15 centuries while preserving its autonomy and ecclesiastical role.

Minister Sofia Zacharaki called the initiative a “historic step,” emphasizing Greece’s role as a cradle of Orthodoxy. The bill also enhances the charitable activities of church institutions, supports Higher Ecclesiastical Academies and Theology Departments by easing foreign student enrollment, and repeals outdated Metaxas-era laws on worship place licensing.
