Presidential guards rescue woman who set herself on fire

Presidential guards rescued a woman who set herself on fire outside a central Athens venue Wednesday morning, earning praise from the country’s president.

The 67-year-old woman set herself on fire around 10 a.m. in front of the Aigli Zappiou, but Evzones from the Presidential Guard who were conducting rehearsals nearby quickly put out the flames using fire extinguishers.

The woman, reportedly homeless and suffering from psychological problems, was transported to a hospital with burns.

President Konstantinos Tasoulas visited the Presidential Guard barracks and congratulated the officers and Evzones for their decisiveness and readiness to act.

The guards were at the Zappeion conducting their routine rehearsal for Sunday’s ceremonial changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
