Emma Sophios, a 47-year-old Australian mother of two, tragically passed away just two days into a five-week vacation on the Greek island of Kythera.
The Queensland woman, who worked at IGA, began convulsing after lying down to rest at a family member’s home. Despite the paramedics' efforts, she could not be saved.
Emma had planned the trip to relax with her family on a Mediterranean island. Her partner, Evalyn Hart, also 47, described the sudden loss as a complete shock, noting that while Emma had faced health challenges in the past, her death was unexpected. “She landed over there, lay down at the family house, and that was it,” Hart told the Daily Mail.
Emma was a devoted mother to her 22-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son, who lives with primary lymphoedema, a genetic condition causing swelling due to an underdeveloped lymphatic system. Known for her warm and vibrant presence, Emma was a beloved figure in her community. “She was a glowy, warm person who remembered people’s stories and little details of their lives,” Hart said. “She had a gravity.”
Robert George, Emma’s former partner and the father of her children, paid tribute, saying, “Though Emma and I went our separate ways, she will always hold a profound place in my heart for the incredible role she played in bringing our children into this world. Her passing is an unthinkable loss.”
Friend Kendyll Rivers, who described Emma as “a shining light,” has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the family with funeral expenses and to provide comfort during this difficult time. “Your contribution will be a testament to Emma’s impact on the world and the love she shared,” Rivers wrote.
Emma’s passing has left her family, friends, and community heartbroken, mourning the loss of a selfless and cherished woman.
Ms Rivers has organised a GoFundMe for Ms Sophios' family.
