Runaway Rover Rides the 477: Athena the Staffy Charms Sydney Commuters with Solo Bus Trip

Sydney, February 18, 2025 — Commuters on Sydney’s 477 bus were in for a surprise on Tuesday morning when a four-legged passenger quietly claimed a seat and enjoyed the ride like a seasoned commuter.

Athena, a three-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier, became an unexpected star of the city’s public transport system after she boarded a bus from Sans Souci in Sydney’s south, making the 4-kilometre journey to Kogarah Station—alone.

Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, Athena certainly lived up to her name with a bold and independent streak that left fellow passengers both amused and amazed. Dressed in a cosy jacket, the confident canine rode calmly and appeared entirely at ease with her surroundings. “She looked like she knew exactly where she was going,” a Sydney Dogs & Cats Home (SDCH) spokesperson told Yahoo News. “She even hopped off at the train station, seemingly ready to board her next ride.”

Described by SDCH as “full of joy and excitement,” Athena’s solo outing wasn’t just adorable—it also sparked swift action from concerned commuters and Transport for NSW staff. Workers at Kogarah Station ensured her safety before alerting local council authorities, who then contacted SDCH. The pup was taken to the Strathfield shelter for care.

But tracking down her family proved tricky. Athena’s microchip details were outdated, and her owners were overseas at the time. A relative left in charge had been unaware the curious canine had slipped out for her impromptu adventure.

Thankfully, SDCH managed to reunite Athena with her family on February 21 after several days of detective work. No further joyrides have been reported since, and it’s safe to say her carers are now keeping a much closer eye on the cheeky Staffy.

As for Transport for NSW, there’s no word on whether Athena tapped on—or off—but officials say she’s forgiven. Her brief foray into independent travel may not make her eligible for an Opal card, but she’s certainly captured the city’s heart.

Sydney’s newest solo commuter has become a furry reminder that not all heroes wear capes—some just wear dog jackets and channel their inner Greek goddess.
