Bakasetas Ruled Out for Panathinaikos Ahead of Crucial Clash with Shakhtar

Panathinaikos suffered a major setback on Wednesday evening (August 6) ahead of their first-leg Europa League third qualifying round clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA), with key midfielder Tasos Bakasetas ruled out due to a hamstring strain.

The Greek international and vice-captain experienced discomfort in his hamstring during Tuesday’s training session (August 5) and underwent treatment on Wednesday. Following medical evaluation, it was confirmed that Bakasetas will not only miss Thursday’s home fixture (August 7, 21:00) but also the second leg in Kraków on August 14, due to the nature of his muscle injury.

As a result, Panathinaikos removed Bakasetas from their UEFA List A for this qualifying round. Replacing him on the roster is the club’s latest signing, Anass Zaroury.

In better news for the Greens, Fotis Ioannidis remains on the list despite suffering a grade one strain in his right adductor during the return leg against Rangers. His recovery is progressing well, and he has a chance of featuring in the second leg against Shakhtar, having completed an individual training program on Wednesday.

The final training session ahead of the match included warm-ups, rondo drills, tactical play, and focused exercises on set pieces and finishing.

Panathinaikos' UEFA List A squad for the Shakhtar matches includes:
Dragowski, Lafont, Kotsaris, Chirivella, Toumba, Siopis, Ioannidis, Zaroury, Tete, Palmer-Brown, Ingason, Cerin, Mancini, Swiderski, Maksimovic, Jedvaj, Mladenovic, Kotsiras, Pellistri, Geremejev, Bregu, Djuricic, Kyriakopoulos, Fikai, Lavdas, and Skarlatidis.
