Romania scrambled F-16 fighter jets in response to a Russian drone attack on Ukraine, occurring just half a mile from its border, a NATO member state. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense reported via X that Russia launched a significant drone assault targeting civilian infrastructure in Ukraine’s Ismail region, close to Romania.
“On the night of August 5-6, Russian forces conducted a massive drone attack near our border,” the ministry stated. Radar systems detected aerial targets in Ukrainian airspace near Tulcea County, prompting a RO-Alert emergency notification at 1:10 a.m. for residents in the area.
Two F-16s were deployed to monitor Romanian airspace, with no unauthorized entries detected. The ministry announced plans to inspect the area and coordinate with NATO allies. The attack reportedly hit oil and gas pipelines at the Orlivka facility in Odessa, with visible flames and smoke along the Danube River.
Hours later, US envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin, amid discussions tied to Trump’s ceasefire ultimatum for Ukraine. Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov described the three-hour meeting as “useful and constructive,” noting exchanges of signals between Trump and Russian officials.
