An off-duty police officer driving his personal vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Wednesday morning in the coastal town of Artemida in eastern Attica, authorities said.
Authorities said the 74-year-old victim was hit shortly before the officer’s car collided with a parked vehicle.
The man was taken by ambulance to Athens’ Red Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officer, who was not on duty at the time, was arrested under Greece’s automatic arrest procedure for such incidents.
Police said a blood test was administered to check for alcohol and other substances.
The traffic police responded immediately to the scene.
A disciplinary investigation has been ordered, and steps are under way to suspend the officer, according to Greek police.
