Nicosia has announced the dispatch of 1,200 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of the “Amalthea” Plan to help address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The shipment, coordinated through the UN-2720 and UNOPS mechanism, will be distributed by the international humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen under UN oversight. Aid will transit through Ashdod port without additional security checks for delivery within Gaza.
Of the total aid, 700 tons come from Cyprus via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ CyprusAid program, while 500 tons are contributions from Malta, international organizations in the USA and Italy, the Order of Malta, and Kuwait. The United Arab Emirates has also played a key role in supporting the initiative.
Cyprus expressed gratitude to all participating states and organizations, noting that the operation fully respects international humanitarian law. Nicosia also highlighted that its aid infrastructure is available to the international community as an additional humanitarian corridor.
“The situation is beyond dire,” Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos told The Associated Press.
Cyprus was the staging area last year for 22,000 tons of aid deliveries by ship directly to Gaza through a pier operated by the international charity World Central Kitchen and a U.S. military-run docking facility known as the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore system.
