The exercise spans from the Evros region to Megisti, involving the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Special Forces nationwide. Over 60 aircraft and the entire naval fleet are participating. A major readiness exercise involving all branches of the Greek Armed Forces is underway across the Aegean, from Evros to Megisti, with over 60 aircraft and the entire naval fleet. The drill, ordered on September 17, 2025, responds to Turkey’s Piri Reis research activities in a geopolitically sensitive area.

According to the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA):
“In the early hours of Wednesday, September 17, 2025, under the orders of GEETHA Chief, General Dimitrios Choupis, a surprise inter-service readiness exercise was initiated. The exercise seeks to enhance operational readiness by testing procedures for implementing special plans within GEETHA’s operational framework. It is being conducted within the Chief of GEETHA’s area of responsibility, covering maritime and land areas, including Evros and the Aegean. The inter-service readiness force, comprising personnel and assets from all three branches of the Armed Forces and the Special Warfare Command (SWC), has been activated.”

Additionally, today at 11:00, the Government Council for National Security, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will convene at Maximos Mansion.

On Monday, September 15, 2025, Turkey issued a NAVTEX announcing maritime research by the Piri Reis in the Aegean for ten days, starting today. The research will take place in a geopolitically sensitive area west of Lesvos, south of Chios, and extending to the islet of Kalogeros, between Chios and Andros.
