A cherished community hub in Adelaide’s northwestern suburbs has been reduced to rubble after a fierce blaze tore through late Thursday night.
The Senior Citizen Greek Café on Kilkenny Road, Woodville Park — a much-loved gathering place for local seniors — was engulfed in flames just after 10.30 pm. The fire ripped through the building, destroying furniture, appliances, and shattering the shopfront glass.
Eight fire trucks were dispatched as emergency crews worked to contain the inferno. Nearby businesses, including a convenience store, narrowly escaped damage.
Owner George Hizartzidis, known affectionately as “Bugsy” in the community, said he was heartbroken when he rushed to the scene.

“I came down and it was already gone,” he told 7NEWS. “It’s devastating — there won’t be anywhere else for them to go.”
For the past two and a half years, George has run the café, building it into a safe and welcoming space for Adelaide’s Greek seniors. He said his greatest concern now is for the locals who relied on it for connection and companionship.
Although the cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed, George does not believe it was deliberately lit.
“I don’t think it’s suspicious,” he said. “We’ve never had any issues — just friendly people coming in.”
Police and fire investigators are examining the wreckage and urging anyone with information or CCTV footage to come forward.
