Greek Flotilla Members Begin Hunger Strike in Protest of Detention by Israel

Eleven Greek members of the Global Sumud Flotilla have begun a hunger strike to protest their detention by Israeli authorities, calling for the immediate release of all participants and denouncing violations of international law amid the Gaza blockade.

Eleven members of the 27-strong Greek delegation participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla have announced they are starting a hunger strike to protest what they describe as their “illegal detention” by Israeli authorities.

In a statement released on Thursday, the group characterized their action as a collective act of resistance against “the crime committed against the Palestinian people and the continued violation of every principle of international law.” They called for the immediate release of all participants in the flotilla.

Earlier on Thursday, Israeli naval forces boarded most of the flotilla’s vessels, which were attempting to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, detaining dozens of activists, including European lawmakers.

Greek authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Greek Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Lana Zochiou confirmed that Athens’ ambassador to Tel Aviv will visit the site where the detained Greek nationals are being held.
