Berlin, October 19, 2025 — Germany has endorsed the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey, calling it a “natural” step to bolster NATO’s collective defense, despite Greece’s warnings that the deal could upset the Aegean power balance.
Speaking in Ankara, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the sale’s importance in strengthening the alliance against Russian aggression. “These jets will defend NATO, including Greece,” Wadephul stated, addressing Greek objections.

Negotiations are advancing for Turkey to acquire 24 to 40 Tranche 4 Eurofighters, with a potential agreement by the end of 2025. The deal involves Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.
Turkey, excluded from the U.S. F-35 program in 2019 after purchasing Russia’s S-400 missile system, is seeking the Eurofighters to maintain air superiority until its domestic KAAN stealth fighter is operational in the 2030s.
Greece has pushed for export restrictions, but Wadephul dismissed the proposal, stating, “No such clauses are being considered.”
Germany’s decision prioritizes NATO unity over regional tensions, risking strained relations with Athens, a long-standing EU ally.
